DEI in Tech
Most of the tech workers these days are aware of what DEI is. While knowing about DEI is a good start, it is also extremely crucial to dive deeper into the meanings of these, so that we as leaders can implement DEI in our workplaces and lives.
Here is my quick take on understanding and implementing DEI — Diversity, Equity, and, Inclusion.
When I think of Diversity and Inclusion, a quote from Vernā Myers sums it up for me:
“Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance”
Diversity is making sure that people from different backgrounds — cultures, race, ethnicities, gender, education, age, sexual orientation are a part of the workplace without any discrimination. Having a diverse group of people provides incredible learning opportunities. While building innovative products, different team members will approach the problems from a unique framework based on their life experiences, upbringing etc., and hence will contribute more towards innovation and process efficiencies.
Inclusion involves creating an environment where the employees have a sense of belonging. They should not walk into the door and feel like an outlier. Leaders should work towards creating a culture where they have an emphatetic mindset and an open door policy which encourages honest communication. Providing psychological safety where individuals from diverse backgrounds feel comfortable to share their ideas and collaborate is an essential element of inclusion.
